"What does a VETERINARY scientist do each day?"

Zoo Curator
I am the assistant curator of the Tropical Forest area at Zoo New England. I make sure the animals that live in the Tropical Forest exhibit get taken care of every day. I make sure we have zoo keepers assigned, and trained to feed, and clean up after them. When a zoo keeper calls in sick or goes on vacation, I fill in as a zoo keeper, but mostly I spend my days working on schedules on the computer, ordering supplies, finding the answers to the zoo keeper's questions, and going to meetings with the other managers in the zoo. If an animal gets sick, or needs a physical exam I work with the zoo veterinarians to help the animals get the care they need. I love my job because everyday is different from the next.

I spend most days in classes such as Physiological Chemistry, Developemental Biology, Anatomy, Cell and Tissue Biology, and a bunch more. Several times a week I am in Anatomy Lab for the whole afternoon working on the dissection(dog and cat this semester and horse/goat/cow next semester). I get to do lots of fun stuff too like ultrasounding the sheep herd to see which ewes are pregnant or sitting in on a colic surgery on a horse or going to the race track to see what vets do there. The thing I like most about vet school is working with my classmates and teachers to solve problems and the friendships I am making in this process.

Zoo Curator
Overseeing a team of zookeepers in the day-to day care of a variety of animals. By overseeing I mean I can help with the feeding, cleaning and sometimes medical assistance with the animals and guide the other keepers in whatever animal problems they may encounter in a day. I like doing this because I've been taking care of animals in zoos for almost 20 years and now I can help other keepers learn new or different things. Sometimes the best thing to teach them is watch and learn from the animals.

I spend most of my time at school in classes, learning about animal diseases and how to treat them. On a few special days, we learn how to handle different animals and do various things with them...everything from milking a cow to trimming a parrot's claws to listening to a dog's heartbeat. I also spend a lot of time studying with my classmates and talking about how to solve cases we could see at an animal hospital.
