"What does a MARINE BIOLOGIST do each day?"

posted: Dec 26, 2001

Fisheries Scientist
I am part of a team that goes out on fishing boats, tries new alternative fishing nets and puts underwater cameras on the nets to film how fish react to the new net. Then we look at what the net catches and how we can improve the catch by modifying the net. We also study the behavior recorded by the cameras to understand what different species of fish do in a net. We do this to figure out how to catch the fish we need for eating without unnecessarily killing other fish species. The part I like best is to look at the underwater films, because animals always do something interesting!

Aquarium Exhibits Coordinator
I spend most of my day communicating with staff from other institutions around the world. In the morning I may be speaking with someone from the U.K. and in the evening, someone from Singapore! I also work with staff here at the aquarium to develop future traveling exhibits, and write proposals to get funding for our ideas. I love exploring new exhibit ideas! I also spend a small portion of my week doing administrative tasks like keeping track of the budget.

Fisheries Management Scientist
Most of my day is spent sitting at a computer or talking to research staff. I e-mail colleagues, surf the web for new grant applications, write papers/grants and analyze data. About 2 months of the year my routine changes when I have to analyze blood samples from fish that I took on fishing trips that usually last 5 to 10 days per year. So, I look for money or write grants most of the year to be able to go out on boats for 5 to 10 days a year!
