 Talking about Science

"What does a SCIENCE EDUCATOR do each day?"

posted: Jan 8, 2002

Physical Science Educator
I spend most of my days in the exhibit halls at the Museum of Science working with schools that are here on field trips and also a lot of family groups. I often have props or gadgets with me to help me talk about particular concepts. Some days we make "hot air balloons" and fly them up two stories; other days I do household chemistry demonstrations; or I might be racing solar cars throughout the exhibit halls. I like being an educator here because every day is very unique.

Physics/Astronomy Instructor, Observatory Director
I spend most of my time hanging out with college students and helping them with their astronomy and physics classes. I teach a class or two a day, but the activities vary a lot. For example, last week I led a Physics lab where we measured the force involved in water balloon launchers.
On clear nights, I often work late with the telescope equipment and various students taking images of galaxies and nebula. I also spend a lot of time working on computers with astronomy software, designing our department webpages, emailing other astronomers in the area, writing physics and astronomy labs and other random stuff.

Science Educator
I spend my weekdays preparing for science classes for K-8th graders on weekends. I make sure that all of the classes run smoothly (no missing supplies etc.). I also purchase supplies for the weekend classes, everything from hand held mirrors and magnets to vinegar and baking soda. On the weekends, I work in the classrooms with the teachers and students helping to teach them about various science topics (like birds, magnets, astronomy). I like being a science educator because I have the chance to make science fun for students and teachers.

Biology Teacher
I am a college teacher in Biology and American Studies. I spend some time each day teaching a class in either American Studies or Ecology, talking with students about their classes, assignments, or life, and talking on the phone with colleagues, people at other colleges, and administrators. Sometimes I also attend meetings about college education issues, faculty issues, or student issues or a guest lecture. I also meet with graduate students. A couple of mornings a week, I get some time to read, organize material for classes and to talk about research. I like the mix of activities and being with people, and it keeps me very busy.
