"If there was one thing you could change about your career, what would it be?"

Answer from "RadVet", a Veterinarian:
I wish that all pets had health insurance so that money was not such a big issue in veterinary medicine. As it is, owners pay for veterinary services out of their own pockets. This means that people with a lot of money can have everything they need done to their pets. People without money can only get a little help with their pets. I would like to make all medical decisions based on what the pet needs rather than what the owners can afford. Most veterinary hospitals have a fund set up to do some work for free but it is a limited amount of money. In a perfect world, everyone would get what they need.

Answer from "BioEng", Biological Engineer:
There are 3 things I wish I had done in high school: studied more, taken an electronics class, and become a plumbers apprentice. By the time I started engineering classes I was behind a lot of the guys who had practical experience with electronics and plumbing.

Answer from "monkeymanager", a Zoo Curator:
If there was one thing I would change about my career it would be the fact that there are more people looking for jobs in animal care at zoos than there are positions available. This keeps the pay low, because there is high competition for jobs. Also if you want to move up to a higher position you usually have to be willing to relocate to another zoo in a different city in order to find an available position.

Answer from "vet_in_04", a Veterinary Student:
I wish I could change people's perceptions of what a veterinarian really does. When I first decided to become a veterinarian, all I really knew is what I think most people know. A vet is the person you take your cat or dog to for shots, medications, etc. However, ever since I started veterinary school, I've learned so much more. We can save whales, help stop criminal animal abuse, improve food safety, make breakthroughs in medicine that could benefit human as well as veterinary medicine. There's so much a vet can do, and it bothers me that people STILL continue to ask me why I'm not studying to be a REAL doctor. I WILL be a REAL doctor, and I wish some people would have more respect for that.

Answer from "stargirl", an Astronomer:
Looking back, I would have applied to more colleges and different ones than I did. I had a very narrow view of where I wanted to go and sometimes I wish that I hadn't.

Answer from "Leak Lady", a Structural Engineer:
Same job, but I'd work in Europe. There are more old buildings there (good for my business) and the food is much better!!

From astrollama, an Astronomer:
I wish there was more time in the day. I wish that I lived in a better location, without light pollution and cloudy weather which make it harder to see things in the sky at night. Also,I wish that I could spend more time in school.
